Why Blocked Drains Vary So Much Across the Eastern Suburbs
In Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, there’s no one single reason for drains to become blocked, because of the wide variety of the area. It covers over 260,000 residents across the Woollahra, Waverley and Randwick council areas, from mansions looking out to the harbour to apartments facing the ocean, as well as inner-east heritage terraces. The drainage character, and the characteristic way of blocking, is different in each part of the region.
In the leafy heritage suburbs (Paddington, Woollahra, Centennial Park), the drains tend to be century old earthenware and clay, and the local issue is tree roots entering the cracks caused by the moisture inside. In the apartment-dense suburbs of Edgecliff, Bondi, Rushcutters Bay and Coogee, clogs more often than not occur in shared vertical sewer stacks, where one unit backs up into another unit’s bathroom. On the reclaimed, low-lying harbour ground of suburbs such as Rose Bay and Rushcutters Bay, a high water table forces groundwater up into cracked pipes, causing a slowdown and back-up in drains during wet weather. Older metal drainage is also corroded by salt right along the coast.
There is one thing that unites it all: non-flushable wet wipes are responsible for approximately 75% of the wastewater blockages in Sydney, and Sydney Water (the water utility) clears about 20,000 blockages a year in its network, at an estimated cost of $27 million. Whether it’s rough old pipe and silt, or roots, wipes tend to get stuck in them in your suburb and worsen the situation.
The thing is, if you don’t know what caused a blockage in a drain, then the only solution is to clear it, temporarily. We cover the entire region, understand which causes are prevalent in which suburbs, and can verify the actual problem by taking footage before recommending a solution to resolve the issue for good.
Eastern Suburbs Drainage: The Numbers
Non-flushable wet wipes are the most common cause of wastewater blockages across Sydney (Sydney Water), the one cause you’re likely to find in every Eastern Suburbs suburb.
Blockages Sydney Water removes from its network each year, at an estimated cost of $27 million, and that’s not counting private pipe blockages.

What Blocks Drains Across the Region
Different neighbourhoods, different reasons. Here’s the full catalogue of what we see across the Eastern Suburbs.
Tree Roots in Heritage Suburbs
Century-old earthenware drains crack in the century-old streets of Paddington, Woollahra and Centennial Park, allowing tree roots to penetrate the cracks, lured by the water they contain. They develop into masses which obstruct flow. While it may clear temporarily, it will regrow in about eleven months unless the cracked joint is sealed, which is done by relining.
Shared Stacks in Apartments
Blockages occur in the shared vertical sewer stack that serves each unit in apartment buildings, such as Edgecliff, Bondi and Rushcutters Bay. If a stack backs up, the lowest fixture gets it first, regardless of who caused it, so the ground level fixtures cop it. We clear the stack and record the reason for strata.
Groundwater on Low Ground
A high water table forces groundwater into fractured drains on reclaimed and low-lying harbour ground, as found in Rose Bay, Rushcutters Bay and the foreshore flats. They slow and back up only during wet weather, since it’s not a matter of what is being flushed, but the ground itself. When the groundwater is sealed off with a lining, it can’t get through the seal.
Wet Wipes Everywhere
The one common reason across the board. Sydney Water estimates that wet wipes contribute to 75% of wastewater blockages, and they get caught on roots, rough old pipe and silt in every suburb. “Flushable” wipes clog because they don’t disintegrate like toilet paper. When there’s any other issue with your drain, wipes typically make it worse.
Salt-Corroded Coastal Pipe
Salt corrodes the metal drainage and cast iron stacks of mid-century blocks along the coastal edge, including Bondi, Bronte, Coogee, Maroubra and the harbour edge. Rougher, corroded pipe can trap debris and block easily. A camera is used to identify whether corrosion is the cause.
Lost Grade and Cracked Pipe
Drainage on the steep routes of Coogee and the end of the harbour suburbs changes over many decades and loses its gradient. A sag or flat spot creates a trap that keeps filling in the same spot over and over. A camera inspection reveals these structural issues that no amount of clearing will address.

How We Clear and Repair Drains
CCTV Drain Camera Inspection
DiagnosticThe camera is key, because the cause differs widely across the region. It identifies whether you have roots, a shared-stack blockage, groundwater infiltration, corroded pipe or just a simple clog, and where it is located. We record the video and show it to you. For strata jobs, it provides a record of whether the issue is on a private lot or common property, which determines who is liable to pay.
High-Pressure Jet Blasting
ClearingA concentrated water jet cuts through roots, wet wipes, grease and silt, all the way through the entire bore of the pipe. Jetting is different from a drain snake, which simply makes a hole in the blockage. We confirm the result with a second camera pass, and we honestly let you know if the cause will be back without a structural repair.
Pipe Relining
No-Dig Repair Permanent FixThe genuine solution to the drainage problem in the region. Relining forms a new pipe inside the existing pipe, sealing the cracked joints that allow roots and groundwater to enter, without digging through heritage gardens, apartment common areas and steep coastal blocks. The interior is smooth and won’t collect dirt in future. Relined pipes come with a warranty of 35 years or more.
Excavation and Replacement
When NecessaryIf the pipe is completely collapsed and not suitable for relining, the damaged pipe will require excavation and replacement. It is careful work in any setting, whether it’s a heritage garden, a compact terrace lot or a steep coastal site in the Eastern Suburbs. That means planning access, protecting the landscape and fabric, and only recommending excavation where relining isn’t possible.
Why Clearing Alone Often Isn’t the Fix
The most common complaint we get throughout the Eastern Suburbs is something along the lines of “we had this drain cleaned last year, why is it getting clogged again?” The answer is invariably that the clearing dealt with the symptom, not the cause.
When roots invade through a cracked joint, root clearing will remove the root mass but leave the cracked joint, which will regrow roots in a year or less. Clearing is of no use when water infiltration is occurring through a failed joint on low ground. And once a pipe has lost its fall and waste has accumulated in a ‘sag’, clearing just restarts the clock until the waste builds up again.
So we start with a camera, not a guess. When you see what’s in the pipe, you know whether you have a clog that will be a one-off, or a problem that needs the pipe sealed or relined. A few dollars to find the true cause saves a lot of money clearing the same drain each season.
Who Pays: Houses, Apartments and Sydney Water
Responsibility for a blocked drain depends on its location, and varies between the properties in the region.
The drainage from your house to where it joins Sydney Water in the street is your responsibility. Sydney Water (call 13 20 90) is responsible for the main and for overflows from a maintenance hole on public land. In an apartment, only the pipes that deliver to your unit are yours; the rest of the sewer system, including the common area drains and the common pipe, is the responsibility of the owners’ corporation. That’s why a lot of the drainage work in the region’s numerous strata-titled suburbs comes down to documenting exactly where the blockage is.
For the homeowner, tenant or strata manager, responsibility and cost can be agreed based on evidence rather than assumption, with CCTV footage and a written report on every job.
How a Drain Call-Out Works
Give us your suburb and what is happening: slow drains, backup, gurgling, a blockage that keeps returning. We send a plumber out.
We use a CCTV camera to find the cause, whether it’s roots, a shared stack, groundwater or a cracked pipe, and exactly where it is located.
With jet blasting, full flow is restored. You receive a transparent price before work begins, and we verify with a second camera pass.
When roots, groundwater or a cracked pipe are the cause, we show you the video and tell you whether the problem will come back, so it’s your informed decision.
What People Say About Us
“Every year, just like clockwork, our drains blocked with roots, and they’d run a camera into them to show the break in the pipe and get it relined. Two years later, not one blockage.”
“Quick and efficient service. I needed to ask a question, they made it to my house within two days, and the price was quite reasonable. Highly recommend them if you need a plumber.”
“Excellent, quick and informative call-out, using the video from inside the pipe to show us the problem. Highly recommend, thanks again.”
