The range of temperatures it goes through is another dimension of hot water woes, not the same as having no hot water at all, but more frustrating in some respects, and with a property that is truly useful: knowing the pattern of the temperature fluctuation tells you what is causing it. It’s a fingerprint, when it comes back after going cold, and what else is going on in the house at that time, together. Here are the six patterns, what each represents, and which are quirks, which are fixes, and which are faults.
Pattern One: Hot, Brief Cold Slug, Hot Again, The “Cold Water Sandwich”
This is a pattern where there is some hot, a brief cold slug, and then some more hot. This is a sort of signature dish if you have a gas continuous flow unit in your home. You turn on the hot water, then off some time later, then on hot again. The trick is that the continuous flow unit shuts off and the water that is already hot in the pipes continues to stay hot for a short time, but it will take a few seconds for the flow to restart before the unit can fire again. All the water that flows through during those unheated seconds is then a cold parcel (between two portions of properly hot water). The verdict: a characteristic, not a fault. That is the trade-off of on-demand heating that is known. There are mitigations, don’t pulse the tap on and off, but for those whose homes it is truly unbearable, some set-ups can include a small buffer or recirculation system, but a sandwich on an otherwise healthy unit requires no repair.
Pattern Two: Goes Cold When You Turn The Shower Down, The Minimum Flow Cutoff
Now the pattern that sounds like witchcraft and is really specification. There are continuous flow units that cannot be activated unless the water flow is at least a minimum. They only switch on when the flow is at a minimum; otherwise, they simply don’t turn on, by design. So: with a hot shower, you turn the mixer to “gentle,” and the shower’s flow falls below the unit’s minimum, the burner shuts off, and the shower is now “gentler,” cold. The unit re-fires, and hot returns. The same physics applies when an ultra-low-flow showerhead, an almost-closed handbasin tap or a “dribble” at the washbasin simply fails to provide hot water on an on-demand system. The verdict: a design level, not a breakdown, but one that does have solutions, such as slightly opening up any hot water outlets that have been turned right down, reconsidering the use of really limited showerheads on houses with continuous flow systems, and, if the system is getting a bit more temperamental as the years go by, scale on the parts can increase the threshold, and a service really improves the situation.
Pattern Three: Temperature Lurches When A Toilet Flushes Or A Tap Runs, Pressure Competition
The good old classic: your shower dithers between hot and cold when someone else flushes the toilet, runs a hot water tap, or starts the washing machine, lurching hot or cold, whichever is left. The mechanism is nothing more than pressure arithmetic, each use reallocates supply, and your shower mix changes with it. The severity varies with hardware. Old-style, simple showerheads send every pressure fluctuation straight to you. The difference is dramatic, because modern pressure-balancing and thermostatic mixers exist just to combat this, detecting the change and correcting it in the blink of an eye. The verdict: your tapware can either amplify or tame normal physics. The proper solutions are behavioural (stagger showers with other household activities), hydraulic (a plumber can check for undersized or partially blocked branches that push your household into these pressure swings), or hardware (upgrading the shower mixer to a pressure-balancing model, the single best fix for households with children).
Pattern Four: Wandering Temperature With No Trigger, The Dying Mixer Cartridge
If the shower temperature is just warm, cool, warm, and nothing else, whether or not there’s a flush or some appliance using hot water, or you have no pattern to point to, the shower is likely the problem in your hands. The ceramic cartridge in a single-lever mixer that blends your water gets worn with the years and becomes clumpy; when the cartridge is worn, it tends to lose its setting and meander out of the mix with the tiny pressure waves that flow through all plumbing. The accompanying symptoms, as noted: a lever that becomes stiff or gritty; a “hot zone” that has moved across the arc over the years; drips when off; or a comfortable shower that requires re-finding each time. The verdict: a wear item stating its retirement, fixed with a cartridge replacement, and it’s better to do this soon, as failing cartridges can also internally connect hot and cold and affect the behaviour of the entire system.

Pattern Five: Slow Cycles Of Hot And Not-Quite-Hot, The System-Side Fault

A system that is hunting is one that has a slow drift in all outlets in the house, water comes out hot one hour and mediocre the next, on cycles of hours, not seconds. The last pattern is a timing tell, meaning the fluctuations show up in winter and disappear in November. Every marginal component is stressed simultaneously, continuous flow units get less headroom when inlet water is cooler (a unit running at its capacity limit copes at an 18°C inlet but not at 14°C), the “half failed” components and the “tired thermostats” get exposed to the higher temperature difference they have to manage, and the minimum-flow problem bites deeper because everyone runs mixers hotter and hence lower-flow. Winter doesn’t cause these faults, it just reveals them. The bottom line: a fluctuation that occurs during winter is a true early warning that is being sent on a convenient time frame, the one that comes out in July when it’s failing a bit is the one that is failing altogether the next July. How do I tell a cartridge problem from a system problem without guessing?
Select the second shower (or any other hot outlet) and run it for a while to see what happens: it will be your control. Any fluctuation on one shower with a steady control indicates a cartridge or mixer problem, and any fluctuation on both the shower and control indicates a system-side problem.
